Arizona

IRC Tucson Center for Well-Being
The IRC Center For Well-Being, with locations in Phoenix and Tucson, is a unique resettlement agency-based program that provides a wide array of mental health services to refugees and asylees. Services include in-home well-being promotion, individual and group psychotherapy, including alternative therapies, and intensive case management for survivors of torture.

California

Center for Justice and Accountability
CJA works to stop torture and other serious human rights abuses around the world by helping the survivors of such abuses hold their perpetrators accountable, especially those perpetrators who live in or visit the United States. CJA offers survivors and their families an integrated approach in their quest for justice that combines legal, medical, psycho-social and other services, as needed.

Center for Survivors of Torture*
The Center for Survivors of Torture is a multidisciplinary program of the Asian Americans in Community Involvement in San Jose, California; They provide psychological and medical evaluation and treatment and social services to survivors of torture from all countries.

Chaldean-Middle Eastern Social Services (CMSS)
CMSS serves the Chaldean and Middle-Eastern communities in San Diego County to maximize their potential towards a better way of life through assimilation, education, and programs. Their programs include behavioral health and immigration services.

Program for Torture Victims*
The Program for Torture Victims is a torture treatment agency in Los Angeles, California. They provide medical and psychological evaluation services for immigration court as well as offering expert testimony at political asylum hearings. They also assist survivors with ongoing psychotherapeutic and case management needs. They train various professionals (physicians, mental health providers, attorneys) on topics related to serving survivors of torture. Torture treatment services were established in 1980.

Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles’ Torture Survivors Project attends to the needs of immigrants who were victims of torture in their countries of origin. It involves both outreach and legal assistance to this diverse community of asylees and refugees. They can be emailed at: tsp@lafla.org

Survivors International*
Survivors International is a torture treatment organization in San Francisco, California, with a satellite office in Oakland. Their network of providers, which includes many volunteers, offers services in the fields of medicine, law, psychology, social work, public health, human rights and psychology. Their Web site includes a “Community Manual” for those working with immigrants and refugees who may be impacted by the effects of torture. Torture treatment services were established in 1989.

Survivors of Torture, International*
Survivors of Torture International in San Diego, California, is a multidisciplinary service organization of providers who include medical and mental health workers, as well as other professionals. SURVIVORS also hosts regular trainings for students and professionals about how to appropriately identify, refer, and serve survivors of torture. Torture treatment services were established in 1997.

Connecticut
Khmer Health Advocates
*
Khmer Health Advocates is a West Hartford, Connecticut, agency whose primary focus is to care for the health needs of survivors of the Mahandorai (Cambodian holocaust) and their families.  They offer psychotherapy and health consultations, as well as training related to cross-cultural health for those interested in working with Cambodians. Torture treatment services were established in 1984.

District of Columbia

Torture Abolition and Support Survivors Coalition International (TASSC)
Located in Washington, DC, TASSC is the only organization founded by and for torture survivors. The mission of TASSC is to end the practice of torture wherever it occurs and to empower survivors, their families and communities wherever they are.

Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma*
Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma is a multidisciplinary torture treatment agency with offices in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC. It offers rehabilitative services to torture survivors in the mid-Atlantic areas of Baltimore, Washington D.C., southern Pennsylvania, and Delaware.  They assist survivors with political asylum documentation, and offer training to physicians, health workers, and community organizations in the identification and treatment of torture survivors.  Torture treatment services were established in 1994.

Florida

Florida Center for Survivors of Torture*
As part of Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services (offices in Clearwater and Miami Springs, Florida), the Florida Center for Survivors of Torture works in collaboration with agencies that include Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Lutheran Services of Florida, and World Relief. Affiliated with the University of South Florida's Medical School and School of Public Health, they offer health, psychiatric, psychological, social services and legal assistance for torture survivors living in Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough counties. Torture treatment services were established in 2000.

Georgia

Center for Torture and Trauma Survivors
Part of the DeKalb County Board of Health in Dekatur, Georgia, the mission of the Center for Torture and Trauma Survivors is to be a community-based center of excellence providing holistic, wraparound services and support to Georgia’s survivors of torture. Established in 2005.

Illinois

Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture*
The Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture is a program of The Heartland Alliance in Chicago, Illinois.  A volunteer network of professionals provides psychotherapeutic and physical rehabilitation treatment services to survivors of torture.  Torture treatment services were established in 1987.

Maine

Refugee Services, City of Portland, Maine
The Refugee Services office of the City of Portland's Social Services division assists new arrival Secondary Migrant Refugees in Portland who are in need of immediate and short-term case management services. Services are designed to improve stability, independence, and overall quality of life for refugees in Maine.

Maryland

Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma*
Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma is a multidisciplinary torture treatment agency with offices in Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service *
The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is a national organization headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, with branch offices throughout the United States.  They address many issues that immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and asylees face when coming to the U.S.  They offer advocacy, training and technical assistance and have partnerships with many organizations.  Their comprehensive Web site provides related links and resources, including the Detained Torture Survivors Legal Support Network.

Massachusetts

Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights*
Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights, a torture-treatment program in Boston, Massachusetts, operates as an interdisciplinary collaboration of providers from Boston Medical Center, Boston University, Global Lawyers and Physicians, and the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Torture treatment services were established in 1998.

Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma*
The Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma is a multidisciplinary program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which partners with the Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Education and Massachusetts General Hospital. They offer clinical, training, research, and policy services. Their Web site provides access to screening and clinical instruments for working with refugee trauma.

International Survivors Center c/o International Institute of Boston*
The International Institute of Boston, along with affiliates located in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Lowell, Massachusetts, provides educational, resettlement, social, employment training, and legal services to refugees and immigrants as they transition to American life. Torture treatment services were established in 1996.

Lowell Community Health Center*
The Lowell Community Health Center serves the many communities of Greater Lowell with multi-lingual staff who speak over 25 languages. The Multicultural Connections for Health Program (MCCH), funded by the United Nations, offers multi-disciplinary services to survivors of torture. The program serves primary and secondary victims of torture in partnership with local community based agencies.

Refugee and Asylum Assistance Project at Community Legal Services and Counseling Center*
The Community Legal Services and Counseling Center (CLSACC) in Cambridge, MA, hosts the interdisciplinary Refugee and Asylum Assistance Project (RAAP) program.  Services include: Legal representation and referral, counseling, therapy, psychological evaluations, expert court testimony and case management for survivors of torture, the majority of whom are seeking political asylum.

Michigan

ACCESS Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center*
ACCESS is a torture treatment program in Dearborn, Michigan, that serves a multi-ethnic clientele of primarily Middle-Eastern descent. Their multidisciplinary team provides psychological, medical, social, and legal services. Torture treatment services were established in 2000.

The Refugee Center for Healing Torture and Trauma
Part of Bethany Christian Services, the Refugee Center for Healing Torture Trauma provides trauma-focused services, utilizing Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (TF-CBT) protocol. It provides comprehensive programs in Kent County for adult refugee and immigrant resettlement, acculturation, mental health counseling, case management, advocacy, and education.

Trauma Recovery Center of Southeast Michigan
A joint venture involving Wayne State University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, its clinical service group (Wayne State University Physician Group—Psychiatry), and the Arab American Chaldean Council. The Center offers health care, mental health, case management, social services, vocational, and legal aid, and is pursuing building the capacity of other providers to respond to the needs of torture survivors.

Minnesota

The Center for Victims of Torture *
Since 1985 CVT has provided multidisciplinary healing services to torture survivors worldwide.  In healing clinics psychotherapists work with clients to heal emotional wounds.  Nurses and doctors coordinate medical care to restore the body. Social workers help clients regain their independence.  Through research and outreach programs, CVT shares its knowledge of the impact of torture and the importance of healing. Advocacy work supports the mission to end torture worldwide.

Missouri

Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma*
The multidisciplinary Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma provides psychological and social services/case management to survivors of torture located in the St. Louis, Missouri, area.  Torture treatment services were established in 1998.

St. Louis Mental Health Board
The St. Louis Mental Health Board Survivors Project began providing services for survivors of torture and war trauma in 2005. The integrated network of specialized agencies with the cultural competence or specialized skills to provide mental health services works to transform a disconnected, uncoordinated set of services into a compassionate, culturally competent collaboration for the improvement of emotional and mental health.

New York

Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture*
The Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture in New York City, New York, is affiliated with Bellevue Hospital Center and New York University School of Medicine.  Their primary focus is to identify, assess, and treat survivors of torture. They work as a multidisciplinary team of medical, psychological, social service providers. They also offer training to physicians, psychologists, lawyers, resettlement workers, students and community members across the country on issues related to torture and torture treatment. Torture treatment services were established in 1995.

HealthRight International*
HealthRight International (formerly Doctors of the World-USA) is a global health and human rights organization working to build lasting access to health for excluded communities. HealthRight’s Human Rights Clinic project, based in New York, works in 10 states to train and deploy volunteer physicians and mental health professionals to assist survivors of torture seeking asylum in the U.S. Volunteers provide clinical examinations for asylum seekers, documenting abuse, providing critical testimony in asylum proceedings, and referrring survivors for follow-up medical care, mental health care, community suport and social services.

Libertas Center
The Libertas Center provides comprehensive services to survivors of torture, including medical, mental, and legal support. It is located at Elmhurst Hospital Center, Queens, New York.

REFUGE-International Trauma Studies Program*
REFUGE is sponsored by the International Trauma Studies Program at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.  The program helps to promote resilience, mental health and social integration of those affected by war trauma and torture.   Torture treatment services were established in 1998.

Oregon

Torture Treatment Center of Oregon*
The Torture Treatment Center of Oregon is part of the Intercultural Psychiatric Program at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.  It offers multidisciplinary services including psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and medical care, case management, vocational rehabilitation, and assistance with asylum.  As part of the University hospital, emergent and inpatient care is easily accessible. Torture treatment services were established in 1998.

Texas

Center for Survivors of Torture*
The Center for Survivors of Torture (with centers in Austin and Dallas, Texas), provides specialized rehabilitation services to survivors of torture and their families. Torture treatment services were established in 1997.

Utah

Asian Association of Utah *
The Asian Association of Utah is a social service agency in Salt Lake City, Utah, that addresses the needs of Asian Americans and Asian Pacific Islanders.  They assist refugees in obtaining employment and other vocational services.  They also offer mental health counseling and supportive services for refugees.

Utah Health and Human Rights Project *
The Utah Health and Human Rights Project in Salt Lake City, Utah, provides direct services to refugee survivors of political torture. They also offer human rights education and advocacy. Torture treatment services were established in 2003.

Vermont

New England Survivors of Torture and Trama (NESTT)
NESTT is a direct partnership between Connecting Cultures and Vermont Immigration and Asylum Advocates, linking psychological and legal services. The overall goal is to provide survivors of torture with holistic, integrated and effective services in a culturally relevant, client centered context.

Virginia

Program for Survivors of Torture and Severe Trauma*
The Program for Survivors of Torture and Severe Trauma at the Center for Multicultural Human Services is located in Falls Church, Virginia.  They offer mental health, legal, language, and social services to those affected by human rights abuses and politically-motivated torture.  Torture treatment services were established in 1998.

Boat People SOS (BPSOS) (Seniors and Trauma Survivors Empowerment Program)
The Seniors and Trauma Survivors Empowerment Program provides comprehensive holistic mental health and legal services for Vietnamese torture survivors and their spouses residing in the Metropolitan District of Columbia area. BPSOS offers five modalities of service: home-based care, peer support groups, clinical counseling, social services case management and legal services.
